“What sea landscapes, wildlife, people, plants, and activities inspire you?”
“How can we preserve the sea for future generations?”
Youngsters from schools in La Herradura and Almuñecar are considering these questions and submitting photos around the theme, “Sea of life: so close, so fragile.” for this year’s photography competition run by Amigos Del Mar Costa Tropical.
Reflejo de Irresponsabilidad (Reflection of Irresponsibility) by Maria Alaminos Vilchez (13) shows a discarded plastic bottle floating in the sea.
Amigos Del Mar are encouraging under 18s to send in their photos before the competition closes on 31st July. All photos will be displayed alongside those from the Campeonato de Europa de Fotografia Submarina at the Centro Civico de la Herradura during the Sea Festival in the first week of October.
Manuel Garcia Roldan (11) and Lucia Alamaninos Vilchez (13) have captured colourful photos of local sealife.
And Serenidad (Serenity) by Carmen Garcia Garcia (16) is a tranquil landscape from La Puerta Del Mar beach.
These and more are on Facebook at Concurso de Fotografia Juvenil La Herradura Almunecar.
An expert panel of professional photographers and media will judge submissions and announce the winners during the week. Prizes will be awarded for all three categories (under 10s, 11-14yrs, and 15-18yrs).
1st Prize: Digital HD Action-cam & A4 colour print of your photo.
2nd Prize: Kit lens for your mobile phone & A4 colour print of your photo.
3rd Prize: Photography book & colour print of your photo.
Chloe Pettersson, professional camera-woman and competition organiser says,
“The photos we’ve received so far have been of a incredibly high standard. The sea and beaches around La Herradura and Almuñecar are a rich source of inspiration, and it’s fantastic to see the passion and enthusiasm the local kids have for these.
We’re looking forward to getting more. So get snapping and show us how creative you can be!”
Local photographic talent, Mary Alaminos Vílchez (13) explains Reflejo de Irresponsabilidad,
“I was diving with my camera when I found a bottle floating and took a photo. Of course I then took it out of the water. I want this picture to condemn the pollution of our seas.”*
All submissions (only one per participant) must be sent with a title and explanation to firstname.lastname@example.org including the entrant’s name and address, date of birth and telephone number. Maximum file size is 10MB.

Asociación Amigos Del Mar
Founded in 2013, the Asociación Amigos Del Mar is an NGO made up of an active group of volunteers from La Herradura’s diving, fishing and local communities. Aware of the economic and environmental significance of the area’s coastline, their goal is to maintain this for future generations. This is achieved through raising awareness of marine environmental concerns through work with authorities and an annual Sea Festival involving the local community.
